Hi all. I've just started a new Manchester United save. I love our current frontline and what I'm trying to do is to bring back CR7 and/or Zlatan to serve as mentors to Martial, Rashford, Greenwood and Sancho. However, while I can get them to join the club easily enough, CR7 especially demands to be at the very least, an important player. What settings can I mess with to get him to accept being  a regular starter/squad player?

I play in the lower leagues and after a couple of years I can get better players to sign but only by offering them to be the star player etc

so if they are not played then the issues start as you say 

however old FMRTE resolves that👇

by changing his status to say a squad player he/they accepts it with no issues at all
