Why when I change a player's stats does it immediately get worse.....

Basically I've got a regen that i when i edit his "influence" stat, literally every one of his stats has a red down arrow. He goes from a 4.5 star player to a 3.. I've tried it on other players too. Is there any way to prevent this? It's really annoying.
